In 2003, I ordered a bunch of yellow-safety-desk checks and had “WRITE A SONG TODAY” printed on them in bold. It was mainly done as a reminder to myself, but maybe too, an encouragement to those that might handle the check to write something.
Over the years, those ugly checks have been reminders to write songs, but I haven’t acted much on it. My output of a handful of songs a year could be more productive. Writing songs and practicing instruments needs to be more a part of my day-to-day activity. Music is always on the conscience. More rarely executed with fingers.
I can’t say that I’ve come across a sentiment so succinct– that gives command to be creative or else suffer grave consequence– that speaks to my obsession to make music, as much as this picture by Hugh Macleod from gapingvoid.com. I once daydreamed a collection of songs to be titled ‘Run Until You Die’. Very much in the same spirit.
Click on the picture to read his page “Ignore Everybody”. It was originally called ‘How to Be Creative’, but has changed since he’s had the article published this month in book form. Read his page. Buy his book. And then get going.
This is the spirit I plan on maintaining for as long as I pay rent at this domain. So I’ve started this blog. I’m a little nervous about it, but whatever. In his words:
I’ve already crossed the Rubicon. Alea iacta est. There is no going back. Ever.
Amen.
